801-412-0176 PEACE DEMONSTRATIONS IN SALT LAKE, NATIONWIDE ON MARCH 20 THE WORLD STILL SAYS “NO!” TO WAR Saturday, March 20, 2004 – noon - 3p.m. On Saturday March 20, the anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the peace movement is mobilizing nationwide to call for an end to U.S. policies of war and occupation. In Salt Lake City people will gather at the State Capitol for a 12:00 noon march downtown culminating in a rally at the City-County Building at 2:00 p.m.
The two major national anti-war activist coalitions in the U.S., United for Peace and Justice (http://www.unitedforpeace.org) and International A.N.S.W.E.R. (http://www.internationalanswer.org), have united in calling for March 20 demonstrations in major cities across the nation. In Utah, the Green Party of Utah (http://www.greenpartyofutah.org), People for Peace and Justice of Utah (http://www.utahpeace.org) and the Wasatch Coalition for Peace and Justice(http://www.wasatchpeaceandjustice.org/), initiated a Utah March 20 Committee which now has broad support from over twenty community, religious and campus organizations.
There will be music and poetry at the State Capitol beginning at 11:30 a.m. and also at the 2:00 p.m. rally. Speakers will include Aaron Davis of Military Families Speak Out, Professor Michael Minch of Utah Valley State College, Dr. Louis Borgenicht, and the Reverend Dan Webster of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Solemn respects for those killed and injured in Iraq will be paid as marchers pass by the Federal Building in downtown Salt Lake.
The Salt Lake City demonstration is organized around four issues: End the Occupation of Iraq, Bring the Troops Home Now Money for Jobs, Education, Healthcare and Human Needs - Not War Defend Democratic Rights, Restore Civil Liberties, Repeal the Patriot Act End the Israeli Occupation of Palestine Organizers are also using the occasion to invite participants to bring non-perishable food and donations for the coal miners on strike at the Co-Op mine in Huntington, Utah.
March 20 peace mobilizations will be taking place internationally, promoted by the European Social Forum and the World Social Forum among others. We are part of a movement which mobilized tens of millions in demonstrations around the world early last year calling on the U.S.government to not invade Iraq.
