MARCH 8th - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY Mar 8 2003
by Alchymedia Thousands Rally for Peace in Women-Led March

"We are the people we've been waiting for." Alice Walker

In a spirited happy pink colored march with nice puppets, from Malcolm X park down to the white house, thousands of people joined the call of Code Pink & the National Organization of Women (NOW) & other groups, to march for peace on International Women's Day. When they arrived at the white house, actions ranged from trying to wrap the white house block with pink ribbon to civil disobedience.

The perimeter within Lafayette Park and Penn Ave in front of the white house, was cordoned off to all but 25 people at a time. A delegation consisting of widely respected and read by people everywhere in the world, authors Alice Walker (The Color Purple) and Maxine Hong Kingston (The Woman Warrior), Pacifica Network's Democracy Now radio host, Amy Goodman, along with authors Terry Tempest Williams and Susan Griffin, Publisher Nina Utne, CodePink's Medea Benjamin, Reverend Patricia Ackerman, and Musician Rachel Bagby, refused to move from the white house and were arrested.

This march on International Women's Day was also the proposed end of the daily peace vigil seen by all DC area residents, maintained by people in the freezing cold and snow for months, with the help of warm drinks and blankets contributed by unknown well-wishers and supporters.

The night before, a line-up of long standing feminist or women's rights musicians & perfomers, graced the stage of Lisner auditorium. Alice Walker reminded the audience that the Iroquois had set up democracy the right way - the grandmothers had final say - in the interest of future generations to come.
